I'm getting messages from a number of folks who suddenly find that
their mail to the xmca mailing list is not longer being sent to
the list - it just disappears into the ether.
In every one of these cases, the problem has arisen because the
sender's address has changed. Usually this is not apparent to the
sender because, as far as they are concerned, nothing has changed
because they still get their mail.
Here's an example:
Joe Bar at the Univ. of Alta California tells folks his email
address is jbar@acu.edu
While his To address simply reads acu.edu, he reads mail at and
and sends mail from a machine called faculty.acu.edu - so the header
>From line reads jbar@faculty.acu.edu
That's the address that xmca recognizes, not jbar@acu.edu
Now, somewhere along the line, for whatever reason (and there are
good reasons that I could explain to the curious), the network
system administrators at UAC, decide to route all incoming and
outgoing mail through a machine called mail.acu.edu
This means that the From line in the header from Joe's mail has
now changed and reads jbar@mail.acu.edu instead of jbar@faculty.acu.edu
The xmca listserv software is not going to recognize that address
and mail from Joe is now not going to go out to the rest of you.
Joe, and you, can troubleshoot this by sending yourself a message
and looking to see who it comes from. If your address has changed,
send mail to bjones@ucsd.edu (which is really a pointer to
bjones@weber.ucsd.edu) and I'll fix things.
onward!
