Position Announcement

HEAD, DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION STUDIES

Nominations/Applications are invited for the position of Head, Department
of Communication Studies. This is a 9-month administrative appointment
plus summer session; the Head normally teaches one class per semester and
one in the summer. The Head provides leadership and advocacy for the
quality, status, and reputation of the department and its faculty;
encourages excellence in teaching, creative activities, research, and
service; promotes undergraduate and graduate programs; recommends hiring,
promotion, and tenure of faculty and staff; serves as a liaison with the
business, human services, and educational communities; demonstrates
commitment to affirmative action and cultural pluralism; and performs oth=
er
duties as assigned by the Dean.

Qualification Requirements:

Qualifications for Department Head include a Ph.D. in Communication Studi=
es
or Mass Communication, tenured associate or full professor with a strong
record of teaching, research/creative activity, and professional service.
In addition, a demonstrated administrative record of:
=B7 outstanding interpersonal, leadership, management, and organizational
abilities.=20
=B7 budgeting and resource allocation experience.
=B7 an understanding and appreciation of the divisions that comprise the
department.
=B7 appreciation of the range of theoretical and methodological approache=
s to
the study of communication.=20
=B7 commitment to creative problem-solving and collaborative decision-mak=
ing.
=B7 ability to work with diverse groups.
=B7 commitment to university and community involvement.
Prior experience as a head/chair is preferred. =09

Department:

Communication Studies is a diversified and dynamic department. The
department faculty consists of 34 full-time faculty, plus adjuncts and
graduate teaching assistants, serving over 600 undergraduate majors and
more than 50 M.A. students. Undergraduate academic programs include
major/minors in: communication, communication education, culture and
communication, electronic media, interpersonal communication,
organizational communication, political communication, public relations,
and a minor in journalism. Co-curricular programs are available in all
major areas. Graduate academic programs specialize in communication,
communication education, mass communication, organizational communication=
,
performance studies, and public relations. In addition, the department i=
s
responsible for an oral communication component in the General Education
Program at UNI. The department will move into one of the university's
historically significant buildings when a $13 million renovation--includi=
ng
5 state-of-the-art computer labs, 24 multimedia classrooms, 2 distance
learning classrooms, 11 audio and video editing suites, a renovated
auditorium, 2 television studios, a performance studies lab, and 40 facul=
ty
offices--is completed in 2001. The Department of Communication Studies i=
s
an academic unit in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, which also
includes departments in Art, Communicative Disorders, English Language an=
d
Literature, Modern Languages, Philosophy and Religion, Theatre, and a
School of Music. A new Performing Arts Center and two public radio
stations are also in the College.

University:

The University of Northern Iowa is one of three state universities govern=
ed
by the State Board of Regents. UNI, with more than 13,000 students and 70=
0
faculty, has more than 40 buildings on a beautifully landscaped campus of
740 acres. The University has a history of strong state support and
excellent community relations.
Community:

The Cedar Falls-Waterloo greater metropolitan area has a population of mo=

than 110,000, and is served by three airlines. Cedar Falls, where the ma=
in
campus is located, has a population of approximately 35,000, and has
excellent technological, medical, commercial, cultural, and recreational
programs and facilities, including the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony, Ced=
ar
Falls Community Theatre, extensive biking and skiing trails, and one of
the nation's first community-owned high-speed fiber optic cable and
Internet systems.
