One of the drawbacks of the research mentality, or "mad-scientist habitus",
is that I forget sometimes that interesting intellectual issues can't take
priority over all other human concerns.

Meanwhile, Bill has offered us an even stranger comparison: the Chronicle
and a Warner Bros. movie promo site. Maybe his depressing message is how
nearly identical they are, as if we needed any more reminders of the
'privatisation' of academe, even outside Australia! :)

My ray of hope came from clicking on the Chronicle's link to report on the
EduCAUSE meeting (previously noted by me, possible reportage to come) ...
where we find Steve Jobs of Apple Computer:

[Jobs] went on to compare Apple to a snake that had swallowed a rat.
"There's no way to get that rat out any faster than it's going to go," he
said.

Maybe the same thing can be said of higher education. JAY.
