In my graduate classes I've often used the treatment of left-handed
people- particualry in school as an example of an oppressed minority.
Right handed people laugh an left-handed ones do not. With a bit of
coaxing each has a long history of horror stories. Ironically at Wayne
State- where we had some left-handed desk-chairs in each classroom
left-handed people rarely seemed to find them. They'd stopped looking
for consideration.
This attitude toward left handedness - like much prejudice- is imbedded
in language: sinister and gauche are latin and French for left; dexter
and adroit mean right.
