APPLIED COGNITIVE SCIENCE The Department of Psychology at Michigan State
University is seeking outstanding scientists for two anticipated tenure
system positions at the rank of Assistant Professor in a
recently-established Applied Cognitive Science Initiative intended to
integrate cognitive, industrial-organizational, and social approaches to
expertise and skilled performance effective August 16, 1999. Applicants
should be interested in working with faculty and students on research
topics that focus on the applications of cognitive psychology, and they
should be interested in helping to design graduate and undergraduate
courses that focus on how cognitive knowledge and skills can be applied to
real-world problems. Expertise in computational modeling is desirable in
both positions. (1) The first position emphasizes the acquisition,
organization, and deployment of complex knowledge. Applicants should be
interested in acquisition of skills, representation and structure of
information in long term memory, and/or cognitive task analysis. (2) The
second position emphasizes individual and/or developmental constraints on
skilled performance. Applicants should address individual or developmental
differences in the nature and origins of cognitive abilities, knowledge,
and performance. Please send a cover letter discussing research and
teaching interests and how they relate to real-world problems, a vita,
three or more letters of recommendation, and representative papers to:
Thomas H. Carr, Applied Cognitive Search Committee, Department of
Psychology, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824-1117. Review
of applications will begin by December 1, 1998, and continue until the
positions are filled. Minority and women candidates are especially
encouraged to apply. MSU is an EO/AA employer.
