Peter's and Mike's postings re jobs reminded me that I had not sent to xmca
any word about our gaggle of new positions ... I am on the search committee
for the science education and the literacy education positions.

These are affiliated with my campus (Brooklyn College) of the City
University of New York, in the School of Education. We have a new Dean this
year and ambitious plans to improve our teacher education programs and
research mentoring for junior faculty by senior faculty. We are also deeply
involved (I am the university-wide committee chair) in developing a new
doctoral program in curriculum and policy studies in urban education that
will have foci in humanities and social studies education, math science and
technology education, and policy studies. At the moment we are replacing
early retirees (why wasn't I one of them?!) and a couple unexpected junior
departures for quieter precincts.

While the jobs are advertised at the Assistant Professor level, higher rank
appointments are possible. Details should be on our anemic campus website
(URL below if I can find it). They should also all be in the Chronicle of
Higher Education (September). Quickly they are:
Associate Prof., Administration & Supervision, educational policy, urban
school reform; MA teaching.
Asst Prof., Literacy and Reading education.
Asst Prof, School Psychology (MA level teaching).
Asst Prof., Humanities/1st and 2nd language acquisition.
Asst Prof, Science Education, esp. elementary education, new curricula and
standards
Asst Prof, Guidance and Counseling in Education (MA teaching)
Asst Prof, Special Education, early childhood
Asst Prof, Arts Education or Social Studies Education

Basically we are looking for anybody good who can do anything. Asst Profs
up to US$45,672. More at higher ranks (a lot more). We are very eager for
people with backgrounds interest experience using information technology
... in ALL of these categories. (About time, we were a little backward on
this and are now enthusiasts, or looking for enthusiasts). And we are a
university that is still committed to promoting access to higher education
for people who don't often get that access.

Some of the positions could be taken up as early as Jan 99. I don't think
many will go that quickly. The review of applications will begin Oct 15 --
and probably go on for quite a while. Officially:

"Review of applications will begin October 15, 1998 and continue until the
position is filled.
Please send curriculum vitae, three (3) letters of reference, and example
of your writing or research publication to: Dr. Joan V. Rome, Director,
Personnel Services, Brooklyn College of CUNY, 2900 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn
NY 11210-2889 USA."

I will be happy to answer email inquiries, if you have already checked on
basic details in the publicly available announcements (so as not to violate
our hiring and affirmative action guidelines).

Come one, come all! Invite your friends! JAY.
