An email message I received today reminded me of Ken Goodman's post about a
week ago on test scores. The individual who sent me the email is from the
Czech Republic. We have been communicating for a month via email discussing
the similarities and differences in our education systems. In today's email
he offered an interesting insight in response to my earlier message on
comparing standardized tests across cultures, "I won't dispute the topic of
international comparing tests, the only important for me is the following
generalization: the better the result the more rigid the education". He has
previously shared plenty of experiences of the rigidness of education in the
Czech Republic and how reform is difficult because they are often at the top
of the lists on many European test scores.
I am curious if his generalization of the connection of high-test scores and
rigid education is just common sense or are there countries that score high
on these international tests but keep their education from becoming rigid.
