I have just returned from a trip to Chicago and was able to visit my old
friend Artin. I had not planned to share this visit with xmca but since
Jay and Mike have already mentioned Artin's accident (and Artin's
willingness to share the information with others), I decided to write a
brief note about my visit. Artin's accident was life-threatening and his
recovery has been lengthy. But I'm happy to report that he seems headed
for a full recovery in several more months. Talking to him about his
experience and his reaction to it was very important for me. He taught me
a great deal (as he often does) about how to value what is important in
life and how to deal with everything else. While I learn a great deal from
my email communications, sometimes you just need to visit an old friend to
understand (as best as one can) what he (or she) has made of his
experiences.
