Responsibilities
* Leading a multi-disciplinary team in the usage-informed development
of leading-edge interfaces for consumer electronic products (see team
mission, below)
* Developing and executing a strategy for interaction design
commonality among CAG (Consumer Appliance Group) products
* Liaising with other human interface design efforts around the
company to ensure a common Microsoft approach where appropriate, and to
apply best practices to the CAG effort; likewise, evangelize the team's
design innovations to the rest of the company
* Selling Design: evangelize design as a key competitive
differentiator CAG execs and product teams
Qualifications required:
* a minimum of five years interactivity research/design in relevant
areas, e.g. consumer electronic systems, graphics and animation, web design,
mobile computing or interactive television
* a minimum of two years working with and managing
multi-disciplinary/inter-organizational teams
* experience shipping products within deadlines
* post-graduate degree in a relevant field, or comparable experience
Skills being sought:
* managing designers and usability engineers
* art-directing staff and contract designers
* reviewing research results and product interface design specs
* creating interface development strategies
* familiarity with leading-edge tools (e.g. 3D rendering, CAD,
multimedia authoring) and practices (e.g. user centered design,
participatory design)
* deriving and communicating customer needs to diverse audiences
* building consensus around innovative design solutions, in spite of
complex requirements
Team Mission
Provide user research and interaction design
services to CAG product groups and execs with the goal of creating a
best-of-breed usage experience for products in the WinCE family.
The team:
* identifies, analyzes, synthesizes and articulates user scenarios,
needs and problems in relation to CAG products
* develops interaction models that address these data
* delivers reports of various kinds and user interface prototypes that
implement these models.
* synthesizes working prototypes out of product plans, aesthetic goals
and user experience data through collaborative relations with all
contributors to particular product designs.
* seeks to drive the discovery and implementation of design practices
and elements in support of a Family of CAG products.
* develops design guides and graphics standards across the WinCE
family of products
* manages and coordinate the work of outside design firms to ensure
both quality and appropriate cross-product similarity
