Sherry, I'd recommend White Teacher by Vivian Gussin Paley (Harvard Press),
and Gerry Rosenfeld's classic, Shut Those Thick Lips: A Study of Slum
School Failure (1971). Also, you might want to look at the work of Kozol,
Delpit, and bell hooks. In Teaching to Transgress,(Routledge) hooks
discusses her own personal experiences in the south when she was
"integrated " after having attended an all black school with black
teachers. It is full of candid reflections of what the experience meant to
her as a student. Another classic is 36 Children by Herbert Kohl. There
are others, but these are my favorites. roberto
