of course society and it's structures are dysfunctional; ...and I don't
suppose I gain any ground by suggesting, as i think i did previously, that
it is somehow just academics who are; but more that the university is not
structured to participate
in society, it is structured to be outside to
study/theorize/analyse/synthesize from an objective distance. It would
follow that the folks who participate actively with/in this structure would
adapt to this, or from certain life experiences be suited for this;
but this dysfunctionality isn't exclusively of the university either, of
course, soooooooo I probably should not have said anything about social
dysfunctionality, and I do apologize to those who may have taken offense.
I just meant that self-evaluative work doesn't work in isolation. And it is
such vulnerable work, it requires a differently supported environment than
academic institutions provide.
