Greetings.
My name is Jakob Bardram. I'm currently a Ph.D. student at the Computer
Science Department at the University of Aarhus, Denmark. I have a
background in computer science and psychology. As a computer scientist
I'm particular interested in studying and understanding how computer
artifacts should be designed and/or adopted to the work situation in
which their are to be used. This is a complex question, and I don't like
the way that this question is reduced and simplified in an almost absurd
degree in much technical and computer science related literature. As far
as I'm concerned, a much broader and overall perspective has to be taken
on the use of computers as artifacts within a work practice. For this
purpose, I have found the ideas within the cultural-historical school in
general, and the concepts of Activity Theory in special, promising.
My current research takes place within a hospital setting. It looks at
how to design and develop a computer system, which supports the complex
coordination and cooperation among the numerous health care
professionals and departments. Some references to this work can be found
at my home page. At the time being, I'm a visiting scholar at the
University of California, Irvine.
