DEAN
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
California State University, San Bernardino invites nominations and
applications for
the position of Dean of the School of Education. The preferred starting
time is
August 1, 1997. Reporting to the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the
Dean is
responsible for the academic and administrative leadership of five
departments
(Educational Policy and Research; Educational Psychology and Counseling;
Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction; Learning, Literacy, and Culture; and
Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education). The Dean is also
responsible for
the administration of the Center for Assisting Students in Education
(C.A.S.E.) which
oversees the process of admissions and credentialing of students in all
areas of
specialization ranging from classroom teachers to administrators,
counselors and
support personnel certification. In addition, the Dean represents the
School to the
University and its external constituencies.
Candidates should possess:
An earned Doctorate in Education
An excellent record of teaching and research at the
college/university level
sufficient for the award of tenure in one of the School's departments
Evidence of outstanding leadership qualities as well as demonstrated
skills in
academic administration through such activities as:
- Establishing a vision and realistic operational goals for an
academic area of
some complexity in a multicultural environment
- Managing teacher education and graduate programs
- Developing curricula
- Developing and maintaining collegial relationships based on a
collaborative
management style
- Obtaining external funding through development efforts and
grant initiatives
- Establishing and maintaining contact with school districts,
alternative
education and educationally related community-based organizations
- Administering financial, physical and personnel resources
- Encouraging and evaluating faculty and staff professional
development
California State University, San Bernardino is located seventy miles east
of Los
Angeles, at the intersection of major freeways, giving easy access to
beaches (75
miles), Palm Springs (50 miles), and mountain resorts (30 miles). The
area offers a
wide variety of recreational and cultural opportunities. Housing costs
average 30%
below those in the Los Angeles/Orange County areas. San Bernardino is
one of the
fastest growing metropolitan areas in the nation. The University has
approximately
12,000 students, 430 full-time faculty and 52 undergraduate and graduate
degree
programs. The campus has five schools: Business and Public Administration,
Education, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social and Behavioral
Sciences. Off-campus programs are offered at selected sites throughout
the service area including
the Coachella Valley Campus which enrolls more than 600 students.
International
programs are also conducted in conjunction with the Universidad Autonoma
de Baja
California in Mexicali, Mexico.
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and
experience.
