A phrase like making meaning is maybe as close as our language can get us
to not making a distinction between objects and events... since making
meaning is like having tea, doing a dance, having a bath... The nominal
group after the verb is not really an entity, but an expression of the
process in nominal form. These expressions differ from things like
building a house, where an entity house is created, or breaking the chair,
where an entity is disposed of. Given Judy's recent concerns about
technicality, I won't recommend a look at Halliday 1994 An Introduction to
Functional Grammar - on Range in relation to Goal, in the transitivity
chapter, clause as representation.
