This query, from Katherine King, raises a question that I assume a lot
of xmca-ites would like to hear answers to, so I am posting it in
hopes of generating some good suggestions.

Hi all,

I will be teaching a course on language, culture and education this
fall. The students will be undergraduates from all different majors.
The class will have about 25 students and there won't be much lecture,
mostly small group work and whole-class discussions. The students will
also be spending some time during the semester doing participant
observation in a variety of settings in the community, places
where learning occurs in semi-formal or non-formal settings (job
training, Little League, community centers, Fifth Dimension, Head
Start, etc...).

I am having trouble finding a text, of course. My ideal text (or two)
would draw from anthropology, linguistics, cross-cultural psychology,
sociohistorical psychology and education, presenting some of the seminal
research done in each of these areas at a very basic level. Our students
tend to be concrete thinkers and tend NOT to do much reading , even if
you test them on it.

Suggestions?? I would appreciate ANY ideas, even it you are
sure I have already thought of it.

Thanks,

Katie

I suggested Gary Alan Fine's *Knowing Children* as an effective
little paperback about ethnographic work with kids.
