play and school testing

Hello everybody--

I hope that the interesting discussion on play is not over yet. I have a
question: What are SIMILARITIES and DIFFERENCES among role plays (like
playing in "Batman" or in "Mother and daughters"), structured functional
games (like chess), and school tests (like math test, "Two motorists left
two cities A and B at the same time to meet each other in-between. The
speed of the first motorist is 55 mph, the speed of the other motorist is 65
mph. The distance between the two cities is 240 miles. After how many
hours did they meet each other?")?

If I understood him correctly, Jay was saying about oscillation between two
realities in a play (i.e., "dully real" and "picturesquely fantasy" worlds),
each of them is "meta" toward the other. I think it is an interesting and
productive idea. It sounds like it works for role plays. Would it work for
structured games like chess? for math test?
