I would like to point out that the statement that Piaget would not expect
pretense before 24 months is not correct. He described various semiotic
functions, including language, pretense, gestural representation, etc., as all
beginning at the same time at the end of the sensori-motor period. Age ranges
Piaget indicated were very general, not absolute. My grand-niece already
began to "feed" her doll at 15 months,and language began soon after.

I wonder if you have seen the book _Pretend Play among 3-Year-Olds_, edited by
Mira Stambak and Hermina Sinclair. This is a nice "Piagetian" theoretical
analysis detailing how one sees structural precursors of operations in pretend
play. It is worth noting, also, that this is a very socially contextualized
account.
