I am completing a doctorate in social foundations of education at the
University of Virginia. Since I am living part time in Michigan while I finish
my dissertation, I am also part of the Sociocultural Research Group at Michigan
State University.
My primary interest is the relation of formal schooling to students'
everyday lives. My dissertation research has focused on this topic in
elementary classrooms in a private school, a public school, and two
homeschools. Major influences on my scholarship have been John Dewey, Lev
Vygotsky, recent ethnomethodologists such as Lave and Carraher/Nunes, economic
anthropoligists Mauss and Bloch, as well as 25 years teaching and consulting
in pre-K through high school in public, private, and homeschools. My
dissertation, a sociocultural qualitative study, draws on all of these to
investigate the barriers to linking students' out of school experiencecs with
math concepts in elementary classrooms.
