I am Sufumi So pursuing my doctoral study in the area of Second/Foreign
Language Education with the Modern Language Centre at the Ontario
Institute for Studies in Education, Toronto, Ontario. The following quote
from Newman, Griffin & Cole's *The Contruction Zone* (1989) expresses what
I have to say as to why I'm interested in sociocultural perspectives and
thus joining this discussion group: "We take the thesis that cognitive
change is as much a social as an individual process. We examine the social
interactions in which cognitive change is constructed so as to begin
putting together a theory that shows how the individual and social worlds
are entirely intertwined. We argue that to avoid dead ends in cognitive
theory and educational practice, we have to go beyond citing individual
factors and social factors as separable influences on cognitive change"
(p.1).
