Hello everyone:

My name is Susan Empson and I am an assistant researcher at the Wisconsin Center
for Education Research, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I recently
completed a PhD in math education (here at the UW). I am interested in how
elementary aged children learn rational number, an in particular, how their use
of notational systems (invented or conventional) supports and interacts with the
development of concepts in the classroom. Some of the theorists and researchers
who have informed this work include Nelson Goodman, Wertsch, Vygotsky, David
Olson, Brian Rotman and Karmiloff-Smith. One of my goals is to couple a deep
analysis of the subject matter (rational number) with more general theoretical
perspectives on sociocognitive constructivism to better understand how children
learn math in classroom settings.

I have been a lurker on this list for at least a year, so it's probably about
time for me to post something. Perhaps posting this first message will make it
easier to join the discussion in the future.
