Charles Bazerman, in the third person, is professor of English at UC Santa
Barbara. In the first person, I am interested in writing as a socially
situated, socially constructive activity that is closely tied to each
person's intellectual development, vision of the social and natural
world, and ethical commitments. I am interested in literate
activity as the means of organizing societies and carrying out
the symbolic work of societies. As part of this package I am concerned
with the interaction of reading and writing as placing us at a
juncture of statements and statement making. My books include
Shaping Written Knowledge: The genre and activity of the experimental
article in science; Constructing Experience; and The Languages of
Edison's Light (in progress). Among my reading and writing textbooks
are The Informed Writer; The Informed Reader; Writing Skills Handbook;
and Involved: Writing for College, Writing for Your Self (in progress).
