As requested, here is my self description.
I am a core faculty member at the California School of Professional
Psychology, San Diego Campus (CSPP-SD). My primary affiliation is with
our Organizational Psychology Programs, where I teach courses on
diversity and multiculturalism in organizations, intergroup relations,
and organizational development. I also advise dissertations, a good
number of these focusing on constructs such as biculturalism, ethnic
identity, acculturation, cultural identity, multi-ethnic and/or
biracial identities, etc. In addition, I direct the Border Project/El
Proyecto de la Frontera, an initiative designed to develop more
binational research, service and/or training projects or efforts
connected to enhancing the quality of life along the U.S.-Mexico
border. Finally, I do consulting work primarily related to creating
inclusion and high performance in organizations.
The primary themes I focus on in my scholarly work have to do with the
connection of the group and the individual (including the issues of
within- and between-group diversity), the meaning and impact of
cultural identity (where/how is culture "reflected in" or embodied in
the person?), and the optimal organizational contexts (and
interventions) for fostering multiculturalism and inclusion. My
influences include social, organizational and cultural psychology, as
well as a variety of other related disciplines. I am heavily
influenced also by my applied practice in organizations. Two recently
completed chapters address some of these themes: "Cultural identity
and diversity in organizations: Bridging the gap between group
differences and individual uniqueness," in _Diversity in Organizations_
(Sage, 1995; Chemers, Oskamp, Costanzo, Eds.), and "Models of diversity
training," to appear in _Handbook of Intercultural Training, 2nd ed._
(Sage; Landis & Bhagat, Eds.).
I'm looking forward to the xmca discussions. I don't typically say much but listen and learn a lot.
Cheers,
Bernardo Ferdman
