Hello. My name is Teresa Meehan. I am a doctoral candidate at the
University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. I am currently doing
dissertation research which focuses on the impact of prenatal exposure to
illicit substances on subsequent language development. Rather than
trying to identify the biological underpinnings of the various language
disorders, I am taking a sociocultural approach to the project and
focusing on the communicative interactions between the mothers and their
infants (15-18 months of age). My primary advisor on this project is Dr.
Vera John-Steiner. I have been greatly influenced by her work along with
other classic sociocultural researchers such as Vygotsky, Wertsch, and
Rogoff, to name but a few. I am also interested in issues related to
discourse analysis, collaboration research, neuropsychology, and drug
counseling.
