I taught high school English in the Chicago area from 1976-1990,
and now work with pre-service and practicing English teachers
(mostly) at OU. Most of what I study these days is grounded
in my teaching experiences. Thanks to Cochran-Smith & Lytle's
Inside/Outside, I now realize that I spent 14 years as a
teacher-researcher before moving to OU. I am interested in
how literacy is defined and assessed in secondary classrooms,
both English classes and classes across the curriculum. I
use a semiotic framework to consider literacy issues, using
a Vygotskian approach that is greatly filtered through a
number of modern researchers, most of whom participate on
xlchc/xmca.
