My name is Mary E. Brenner, although my friends
more commonly call me Betsy. I am an Assistant Professor
of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
I am an Educational Anthropologist who specializes in
studying mathematical cognition, everyday reasoning and
classroom practices for students from culturally diverse
backgrounds. I received my Ph.D. from the University of
California, Irvine based upon research I did about schools in
Liberia. I then worked at the Kamehameha School in
Honolulu, Hawaii where I did research on the mathematical
thinking of Native Hawaiian children and early literacy
practices in Native Hawaiian homes. I also worked with
teachers to develope curriculum materials for elementary
classes. From Hawaii I went to the SESAME program at the
University of California, Berkeley. During that time I continued
my research in Liberia, examining the diversity of cultural
institutions that help shape ethnic identity. After teaching for
four years at the Berkeley, I came to Santa Barbara where I
have been conducting research on innovative mathematics
instruction at the elementary and secondary levels with a
particular focus on linguistic minority children.
