I work in the area of teacher preparation--specifically teachers of business
subjects and, more broadly, instructional uses of tecnology. In the area of
business education, there has been a long historical concern for economic
citizenship, but in recent years I think there has been an over-emphasis on
technological procedures. Since I work in depth with technology, I am
particularly sensitive to this narrowness. It can be an extremely
reductionistic, skill (step-by-step) oriented kind of teaching situation
that is in constant turmoil as new software needs to be accounted for and
teachers try to keep up with what they think business and industry is doing.

I would like to look more broadly at teaching persons to use technology,
particuarly in employment settings, that takes a more wholistic approach to
how technology is used, who uses it, and expectations made of people in work
settings. The social-cultural approach that is apparent in this group seems
to me to offer much potential for looking taking this broader perspective on
how people learn and create meaning in both school settings and employment
settings. I can't remember how I found this group. I have previously been
influenced by the writings of many people, many of whom are now as UCSD and
participants in this group. Some of these include the obvious ones:
Michael Cole, Yrjo Engestrom, and Jay Lemke. I am particuarly intrigued by
the ideas in Activity Systems as an analytical tool for understanding work
settings. Other keys writers for me have been Jean Lave, Roy Pea, Gavriel
Salomon, Lucy Suchman, Terry Winograd, and Charles Crook.
