I first started being educated by xfamily in the 80's when Norris Minick shared
various threads with me, and I've had my own "address" for the past few years.
Last year I started teaching here at the U. Northern Iowa, in a premier teacher
ed program. I teach curriculum and the child-family-school-community relations
course, required for the early childhood ed endorsement. One of my goals
is to prepare fairly homogeneous teacher candidates and practitioners for the
diversity and special needs of the children & families they will be working
with. I got my degrees in Human Development from U. Chicago, detouring through
a 10-year career at the Spencer Foundation in Chicago before returning to an
academic career, 1st as a postdoc in the Center for Urban Ed Research & Dev. at
U.Illinois at Chicago, and now as asst. prof. at UNI. I am a generalist, human
ecologist, educationist w/no firm disciplinary allegiance, as much an
anthropologist or sociologist as I am a child development person. I have
thrown my lot in with those who are interrogating developmentally appropriate
practice and its too-psychological base, Reconceptualizing Early Childhood
Education. I am trying to maintain my connection with the Classroom Effects of
Reform study being done by the Consortium for Chicago School Research, while
working in a high-poverty school here in Iowa. I depend on a lot of old friends
former grantees, and new guiding lights in the xfamily for elements of my
conceptual framework.
