Hi! My name is Elizabeth Moje. I'm an assistant professor in the
department of Educational Studies at the University of Utah. My
areas of interest are disciplinary literacy teaching/learning, teacher
education, and research methodology. I draw on sociocultural theory,
symbolic interactionist theory, and work in cultural studies to
inform my studies of literacy teaching and learning and my work in
teacher education. Although I'm interested in how children learn, I
am currently using sociocultural theory (and s.i.) to study how
teachers learn to teach. I am especially interested in how a
"culture" is created within a classroom through teacher and student
interactions, and how that culture, in turn, shapes the literacy
and teaching/learning practices and discourses in the classroom. I
like to study in secondary school classrooms because the disciplinary
influences add another layer to the construction of literacy
practices. Most of my work has been conducted in science classrooms,
although I am currently studying in a junior high school English
classroom.
