As an assistant professor in the Department of Education at Free University,
Amsterdam, I am a member of a small group that has been consistently
interested in doing research on education along socio-cultural lines. My own
work has been partly theoretical, trying to conceptualize the assumptions and
presuppositions of the most popular 'paradigms' of education and contrasting
these with an ever developing socio-cultural view. Over the last year or so,
I have been interested in the concept of identity and how schools contribute
to its development. I have also tried to connect this to a small-scale
empirical project in which I am asking teachers at kindergarten level how
they see their work contributing to identity development, and what
developmental theories, if any, guide their activities. A next phase in this
project will probably include classroom observations. Oh yes, I also teach
classes in socio-cultural theory, philosophy of education, and research
methods.
