Happy New Year, David and Dear All!
David,
"he feeds him with a spoon and then
pokes him in the eye with it" -- a peasant (muzhik) is "he",beggar is "him" - a peasant takes in a beggar, and then begins to reproach him. Thus, to answer your question, muzhik pokes this poor beggar but not at first. Not before he feeds him.
Cheers,
Natalia.
P.S. I use this case study that I call "Lev about Lev" in my classes all the time and my students often have difficulties relating to this translated version of Russian -

Subject: [xmca] Help With Russian
I'm afraid I need some help with Russian again. We're on holiday here for Korean New Year so I can't ask my Russian teacher (or my Russian neighbor).
We're translating Vygotsky's "Imagination and Creativity in Childhood" (which was apparently first published as "Imagination and Creativity in School Age"). On p. 40 of the Russian text (which is p. 47 of the version in JREEP 42 [1]) it has this:
Now, in SOME translations, what happens is that the beggar reviles the muzhik. And in SOME translation, the muzhik reviles the beggar. Who pokes whom?
Happy Korean New Year of the Snake, everybody!
