[xmca] Assistance needed
Dear Friends,
I am looking for someone who can code transcripts of conversations in a
Preschool setting. This is for my PhD dissertation on Sustained Shared
Thinking which is a special sort of ZPD where a teacher has constructed a
classroom culture of thinking spaces through dialogue and the children's
minds are engaged in thinking. This is a paying job and requires probably 50
- 100 hours of work and needs to be done by Christmas. There are training
documents and practice transcripts where the intercoder can find out if they
have reached the level of ability to proceed into the main work. Research
assistant level of pay rate, negotiable.
Preschool dialogue influencing children's thinking
The dialogues to be coded are 5 different preschool teachers interacting
with 3 - 6 children in 3 activities of story book reading, a writing/drawing
exercise, and one selected by the teacher. The main construct under
investigation is Sustained Shared Thinking (SST) which is defined as a
series of turns where child thinking is valued, visible, and actively
promoted by the teacher while engaged in: a) scaffolding or extending ideas
or concepts; b) discussing or exploring events or experiences; c) modelling
language or behaviour; d) using language or ideas playfully or creatively.
The teacher is usually challenging or expanding children's thinking through
questions, acknowledgements, hints, or examples. Coding the SSTs includes
who started the episode and who leads it (child or teacher), as well as how
long the episode goes in terms of turns taken. The entire dialogue is also
coded for a variety of types of questions and acknowledgments, for example
different kinds of open, closed and statement questions. A second and deeper
level of dialogue analysis includes coding for Gricean Maxims(Paul Grice)
and blended spaces (Fauconnier & Turner). There are separate training and
practice documents for both first and second level coding, so that either
can be undertaken separately. The transcripts represent about 100 minutes of
dialogue.
SST - (Siraj-Blatchford, Sylva, Muttock, Gilden, & Bell, 2002)
Visible thinking - (Ritchhart & Perkins, 2005)
Gricean Maxims - (Grice, 2002/1967, 2008/1978)
Blending space - (Fauconnier & Turner, 1996, 2002)
Thanks for any help also in finding someone who matches this interest of
mine.
