RE: [xmca] Smolucha - pronunciation/genealogy (Systems of functions & Vygotsky's Thinking and Speech)
Thanks Martin. Teasing Vygotsky out from the surrounding discourse is often a challenge for me.
I would need to go back and do a lot more reading than I have time for right now, but my sense was that Luria thought that the Uzbeks had developed only highly localized conceptions (everyday/spontaneous), and bad ones at that ("backwards" Muslim beliefs). I don't know what LSV thought of that one. What I'm not sure about is whether lacking a scientific/academic dimension arrested them at "lower" levels.

Are you asking my opinion, Peter, or my reading of what Luria and Vygotsky wrote? In my own view, yes of course the Uzbeks were employing higher psychological functions. However, when I read what AL and LSV wrote about those studies, and about 'primitive people' more broadly, it seems to me that they are suggesting that such people are capable of only the earliest forms of the higher functions. You recall the discussion of divination, a while back? I mentioned then LSV wrote that using dreams to predict the future is deliberate and conscious, but it is also magical. Just the first step along the path towards true rationality. (Actually he wrote different things in different places, but let's put that aside for the time being.)
You wrote, a few messages ago, that "that higher mental processes are those specific to a culture, and thus those that embody cultural concepts so that they guide activity." I don't recall that LSV ever wrote of the cultural specificity of higher psychological functions. I can certainly agree with you that he *should* have entertained that notion. What I find in the texts, though, is an appeal to "scientific concepts" that seem to be cultural, but not culture specific.
