Peter--
There are several related questions to yours on higher psychological
functions a la LSV. (e.g., what is creativity-- but on that topic we have
a
lot of expertise on xmca so others can weight in). My own first take would
be that LSV considered all (culturally) mediated psychological functions to
be "higher."
When I googled the combined entries, the first thing to come up was:
Encyclopedia of Creativity - Google Books
Result<http://books.google.com/books?id=cpc7CJH1-s8C&pg=RA1-PA695&lpg=RA1-PA695&dq=Vygotsky+%22higher+psychological+function%22&source=bl&ots=nK6fzTAn2C&sig=TFB4zwTBRH7YKfVaExPRDmb8eaw&hl=en&sa=X&ei=PxvjT8GYGOOY2AWMrozJCw&ved=0CEoQ6AEwAA>
books.google.com/books?isbn=0122270762*...*Mark A. Runco, Steven R.
Pritzker - 1999 - Psychology - 810 pages
The starting point for understanding *Vygotsky*'sview of creativity is that
he believed that creativity is a *higher psychological function*. It is one
of the complex a.
