Sorry for being slow on the uptake (been busy writing and then driving
back from AZ).

As for Gadamer, I appreciate you bringing him in. I get the sense that
I need to be reading him, but I haven't figured out why yet and so
other matters remain more pressing.
As for Markell, the one thing that I would add is how his notion of
temporality also points to the importance of action over character.
Markell notes that Aristotle said that the unfolding action
(activity?) was the most important of the elements of the play. This
goes against our intuition that the characters are what matters most.
And I think it nicely pushes away from, as you note, overly
deterministic and preformed notions of identity and subjectivity. But
I'm glad that you've found the book to be useful. He chose great
material to work with (Antigone).

But I'd add that, following Andy's critique of Robert Williams, I
don't know that Markell has explicitly articulated a notion of
mediation. But it is in there in his analysis of discursive forms that
index gender in Antigone and Creon's words. Mediation is also implied
in his notion of impropriety of our actions - that we don't have
control over the meanings of our actions b.c. it is up to others to
determine what/how they will mean.

I didn't mean to be too dismissive of such prescriptive approaches. I
would think that this can be productive for people who are interested
in being "anti-racist" or otherwise see themselves as just and ethical
people (in the way that we see ourselves as such) and who remain
somewhat misguided due to their own quest for sovereign agency (and it
would be foolhardy not to include ourselves in this lot!). The reality
is that this kind of growth/development/learning will be uncomfortable
and will require support. I recently saw the movie The Help with some
extended family and they were lamenting the fact that it was
criticized b.c. it was written by a white person and was about the
experiences of black housekeepers in the early 60's. It was a fine
enough movie, but it certainly was of the genre of a racial fairy
tale. And like all fairy tales, it gives the viewer a sense of
sovereign agency: It was people *just like me* who did the good work
of bringing equality and justice to this country in the 60's. Fact is
that it was much messier than this, never so easy as it seems for the
"good guys", and bad guys weren't as bad as they appear in the movies.
And the fact is, if we were to have been in those situations, few of
us would have joined the march and many of us would have stood by and
watched.

But I still do wonder how one goes about the work of "dismantling this
perspective (of sovereign selves) before we can participate in more
generative practices of reaching understanding that 'see through' this
perspective which rejects acknowledging our shared vulnerability."
Seems like an important project to articulate.
