second thoughts, part 1: as I said, many good thoughts, many good symposium, - here a few mentioned:Prof. Francesco Avalloone about living together, in a world with many crises, it demands participation, tolerance, joint-action, transparency, trust, respect, communication, rules, pleasure, - sharing. ... and as I understood Alvalone, it is what we constantly must re-shape together, to secure "the new generations development.
Jean Lave mentioned at her final key speech, that she experienced Avallone to be the first and last speech - talking about politics.
After that followed Prof. David Olson, talking about writing, language awareness and Rational Discourse. He showed that the way we talk and understand language changes when society is changing, talked about two different modes, the narrative versus the paradigmatic, and how that can confuse logical reasoning (the Linda problem). ... He concluded that logical reasoning demands a special orientation towards language, and that school can create "a new consciousness of language", if CHAT-education is practiced.
...The first symposium I attended to is *number 651. Young people expansive learning from the margins of education*. The presentations where from different working fields, the three about young people from ethnic minorities, one about a boys experience, after a traffic injury brain damage, and how it changed how to make meaning and sense. Eli Marie Killi build on Leontjev, Wenger and Ole Dreiers thoughts, - and she concluded that scaffolding is the necessary component in helping this boy to "make meaning and learn". Laila Colding went further on, on the same root, but now about the problem for marginalizing young people from ethnic minorities. Here, too, it was important that just one important person/adult around could create a zone for development, an oasis of acceptance, which could help to react to "double binds", the kids often meet, every day, like/I want to be good at school, I want to be part of "the gang"/. Discussant Kevin O'Connors underlined the fact, that an expression like "legitimate perifer participation" fits fine to the two speakers points. Line Mørch went on with presenting "production-schools", where young people who do not "fit" the normal education system, get the possibility to experience many different kind of practices, while being at such "school". Line is inspired by Dreier and Hage, and used concepts as culture codes and practice ideologies to underline her points. Positive interpellation creating a subjectification process, where the young people experience:/I am participating in societal praxis/, is here the solution, non-, negative or mis-interpellation something we should know what is, but avoid. Lutine de Waal talked about how we can support the education of unaccompanied refugee youth by creating a context, which supports and delivers a "zone" for learning, for being, for socializing with peers, for psychological adjustments after traumatic experiences.
As you can read - a lot of inspiring work, and I will look forward to read more about the work of this four presenters, - creating, for me, a bridge between good old school Vygotskij thinking, combined with what Jean Lave and Dreier can contribute, thereby making it relevant to work "_with_ the coming generations" (as Lois Holzman commented).
