thanks for assembling the document . It is fascinating to see how the conversation has emerged over time.
Mike
thanks for the post on the article by Gratier, Greenfield and Issac. I have just finished reading the theoretical section of the article and it seems it was written to respond to so many of the themes we have been discussing on this topic of emotions.
Even the title with the terms "communication style" and "attunement" are constructs interweaving through our extended conversation. If seeing the sociocultural on three levels (micro, meso, and macro in Cooley's terms) is appropriate, this article is discussing the meso or intermediate level.
One paragraph was especially congruent to the perspectives I've been trying to elaborate.
On page 299 "tacit communication style" was described as including "conversational and vocal style, ways of moving, engaging, touching, and above all ways of patterning expression in time, plays a central role in structuring interaction and characterizing forms of 'BEING TOGETHER' THROUGHOUT LIFE."
This view of communication at the meso level seems to be very congruent with the notions D.Stern and others are exploring at the micro level.
I personally love the framework that sees dominant school discourse as privleging an "individualistic" worldview while other cultures are more collectivistic. I know these are generalities and abstractions and could be deconstructed but they are congruent with my biased and fallible worldview. As long as we view these positions metaphorically as pointing to "patterns" and not as concrete facts.
The question I wonder about when reading this article is what "leading activities" will guide the dominant school discourse and practices towards a collectivist "habitus"? The individualistic worldview is so oppressive.
