Building off the energy of the 2009 Qualitative Analysis Conference we
are already full speed ahead on planning for the *2010 Qualitatives*,
and we are very much hoping that you'll be able to join us for this
event.  The conference will be held at *Wilfrid Laurier Unviersity's
Brantford campus, May 13 to 15th, 2010.  *Brantford is in southwestern
Ontario, Canada, just over an hour's drive from Toronto.  The theme of
the 2010 Qualitatives is "*Social Pragmatism as a Conceptual Foundation*."

The 27th Annual Qualitative Analysis Conference:
Social Pragmatism as a Conceptual Foundation
Wilfrid Laurier University, Brantford Campus

Abstract Submission Deadline: September 17th, 2009
Theme: The 2010 Qualitatives is built on the theme of social pragmatism
as a conceptual foundation
for qualitative research, and related themes in the
interactionist/ethnographic research tradition.
The Canadian Qualitative Analysis Conference has always had an affinity
with classic Chicago-school
sociology, the urban ethnographic tradition, and the broad philosophical
and conceptual framework of
American pragmatism. Since its early American origins, pragmatism has
grown and evolved both here
and abroad, thus intersecting with, accommodating, and adjusting to
various strands of social theory.
We ask scholars to report on the shape and impact of these advances, and
evaluate their relevance for
analysis within qualitative research. Can we draw together insights from
contemporary pragmatist
social theory to establish a consistent conceptual foundation for
interpretive research into the 21st
century? Could this theoretical vision both provide continuity with our
roots in early Chicago-school
ethnography and interactionist theory, yet also address new challenges
in contemporary sociological
theory and research? Further, how might recent qualitative research
findings contribute to, or reshape,
pragmatist conceptions about the self, knowledge, and social action? To
this end, our conference
welcomes theoretical, empirical, and methodological papers from both
novice and veteran scholars as
they address the following themes:
. New Directions in Pragmatist Social Theory
. Doing, Writing, and Publishing Qualitative
Research
. Crime, Deviance, and Social Control
. Knowledge, Science, and Technology
. Entertainment and Media
. Health and Illness
If your paper does not fit into these categories, but is related to
pragmatist scholarship, or ethnographic,
qualitative research in some way, we still very much encourage you to
send in an abstract. With
enough submissions on one area, we can develop new themes as appropriate.
Keynote Speaker: We are proud to welcome Dr. Neil Gross (University of
British Columbia), the
incoming editor of Sociological Theory, to present the keynote address.
