South African Professors Face Disciplinary Hearing
Two eminent professors from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in
South Africa are facing disciplinary proceedings by the university after
criticising the vice-chancellor in the media. John van den Berg, a
professor of mathematics and Nithaya Chetty, a professor of physics, are
accused of breaching a senate confidentiality clause.

One of the professors has signed an apology, the other resigned
yesterday. There is an ongoing debate about this issue on the Change
mailing list, which is accessible to those outside the university. There
have been a number of letters from professors/academics/chairs/faculty
at other universities across the world to protest the university’s
stance.
