Between your posts and mine, Ana is probably going to have to write
another paper, and maybe a book or two, to cover all this territory we
are talking about! We are asking questions that go to the very heart
of activity theory, subjectivity, psychology, as do the ideas in Ana's
paper. We won’t create all the answers in one discussion, of course,
but I think we are addressing some of the important questions.
By the way, your post fell victim to some formatting problems in its
electronic transmission, so I found myself doing some technical
editing as I read it – removing spaces that didn’t belong and adding a
few paragraph markers to render it more readable. I have included
this edited version below to help anyone who might want to take a
closer look at your very interesting points.
Let me take a couple passages from your post and see if I understand
them. What I have done is rewrite them in slightly expanded versions
in ways that seem to me to make the points you are getting at. How
did I do? Would you please critique these rewritings, in order to
help me understand your thoughts better ...
A. Here are your words:

Here is my interpretation of what you are saying. Note I bring in the
terms internalization and externalization as a way to tie all these
points together.
1) Activity is not linear, it is circular.
2) Activity consists of a two-part process; a) the internalization of
given objects and b) the externalization of new objects or changes to
existing ones.
3) Objects are both a) independent propertied entities and b) images
or reflections in the mind and consciousness of the subject.
4) These same objects also come to the subject appearing as needs,
desires, feelings, drives, incentives, etc., and, ultimately, as
motives that become transformed into ideals.
5) The processes in 3) and 4) are called internalization.
6) A reverse process from within the subject begins with these
internalized objects, which become ideals.
7) Through the process of activity, these ideals become objectivized
as products. This is the process of reification. Once again,
objects, as described in 3), appear.
8) This process of objectification is called externalization.
9) This process of internalization and externalization is circular, or
cyclical, repeating again and again.

3) In fact, the advocacy of subject-relatedness in activity is quite
strong within the CHAT community.
4) Some even go so far as to oppose the Hegelian/Marxian concept
“freedom is the realization of necessity.”
5) Instead, they depict the “agent” as an unconstrainable, omnipotent,
ever-absolutely powerful force. This point of view is taking
essentially an existentialist view of human will, seeing it as an
independent force of its own.
6) This overall discussion within CHAT around subject-relatedness has
influenced Anna Stetsenko, the fairest of all as I see it, to lean
toward subjectivity of a special kind.
I would be very happy to discuss Anna Stetsenko’s thoughts on object-
relatedness and subjectivity. I picked up the idea that “subjectivity
is object-related” from her 2005 paper. Her critique of Leontiev in
that paper emphasizes his strong points, such as activity being object-
related, but she goes on to say that Leontiev had not and CHAT so far
has not sufficiently theorized or studied the critical role that
individual subjectivity plays in externalization in particular, and
collective activity in general.
She calls this 2005 paper “Activity as Object-Related: Resolving the
Dichotomy of Individual and Collective Planes of Activity.” Here is a
passage:
“A.N.Leont’ev's (1983) idea of activity cycles needs to be expanded to
include human subjectivity, emerging within and out of activity, as
being not only a product of activity but also inextricably part and
parcel of further activity cycles, that is, as being involved, brought
about, and implicated in the production and expansion of new activities.
“Thus, the emphasis is placed on human subjectivity as being object-
related in the sense of it being involved in the creation and
production of new objects, relations, and other aspects out in the
world of social practice.”
Back to the passages of yours, Haydi: would you look over my
interpretations for accuracy?

article, I can recall Chomsky, John Searle, Austin, Widdowson, Clark

all these is not such an easy task to fulfill. I admit one bends under
such a burden.

What is the inadequacy and where is it ? How is meaning generated? We
believe it was born in the process of work activity. The collective
wanted to have a means to exchange ideas and intentions so that the
work involved could proceed. But language world is not identical with
natural or social world. David Kellog works well with "word meaning".
His major activity has a specific object. We might distinguish minor
activities within that major activity including some material ones.

you, topic, comment? I suppose David Kellog once stressed that
Vygotsky in his " Speech and Thinking " did not intend to teach "

9. Positivists most often stick to formal logic. Nowadays, syllogisms
of the kind "Man is mortal; Socrates is a man; Therefore, Socrates is
mortal" do not appeal to logicians. That was why Searle and Austin
stepped in. Locutionary, illocutionary, perlocutionary acts partially
change the situation.
Topics don't come our way arbitrarily. If it's a class space and an
educational activity, ok. Why not ? Topics as goals/purposes. Topics
as motivation/motive.
Take this plz :
It's a student's birthday. She's brought a cake in. Teacher has long
thought out students *need* to be jubilant so that *progress* might
occur. This has so far been cryptic to the students. Now this need
comes across the bringing of the cake, hits it; a motive is created.
How could one lead a happy life? Teacher takes the time/occasion. She
issues orders. This group missioned to the division of the cake. That
group missioned to the handling of plates/knives/forks/etc. so on so
forth.
That is, each group with a conscious assigned goal and a corresponding
action. Groups feel close to their due actions but far from yet
cryptic motive. The motive "How could one lead a happy life" does not
coincide with either action of each group. Cutting of the cake #
Leading a happy life. But in the end, every individual of the
collective might figure out so as to have a share of the final ideal
product (happiness), she should do this/that (actions).
I tried to apply Leontiev's sample of hunting for food to an ordinary
life situation with due characteristics.
