Dear Peter and everybody--
Thanks for your useful advice. In my observation, "be kind to your
colleagues" is not easy since a part of being in academia involves summative
assessments of your colleagues by you and you by your colleagues that can
highly affect your and their professional financial well-being. Often,
junior faculty interpret the "be kind" advice as to be silent especially on
the scholarship matters since you do not know on whose toe you might step
down. As Peter correctly wrote, "if you've ever discussed a borderline
tenure or promotion case with your colleagues, you know that people will use
whatever evidence they wish to support their position regarding the person's
credentials to earn a lifetime appointment." I definitely notice that as
well.
