Very interesting, David. I used to teach my first and second graders
how to read and create words using peanut butter for the vowel sounds
and bread for the consonant sounds. A complication arose when
presenting r-controlled vowels such as "girl" or "curl", but this was
easily remedied by placing onion (the letter "r") into the sandwich.
In American schools, we needlessly have the children memorize the
alphabet first, then letter sounds, and after completely confusing the
children, present syllables. When teaching reading in Spanish, however,
we play around with phonemic awareness and move into syllables (ba, be,
bi, bo, bu, ca, ce, ci, co, cu) rather quickly. During a research study
a few years back in a Spanish-English dual immersion classroom, I
observed English dominant kindergarteners who came from privileged
backgrounds reading in *both* English and Spanish after being taught
exclusively in their target language or L2 which was Spanish.
