hi mike

i worked in an afterschool program in st. louis public. my middle school students did the activities described below using Shadow netWorkspace --an online workspace that is Linux-based. it was designed and served from the University of Missouri-Columbia COE's School of Information Science and Learning Technologies when i used it but the program is now in the open-source site Source Forge for free download-- http://sourceforge.net/projects/shadownet/ <http://sourceforge.net/projects/shadownet/>

it's interface is not really sophisticated but it is free- it allows for common workspaces for the students to post work, co-edit and design and it is login protected.
