We began signing with our daughter when she was about 1 1/2 months,
focusing on the things we thought she might need to tell us. By 3 months
she could sign to have to her diaper changed. By six months she could
easily tell us when she was hungry or wanted more. We had quite a
repertoire of signs that we used from the Sign with Your Baby by J.
Garcia and that we developed ourselves based on the book and our needs
and abilities - including my husband's and my ability to remember them!
Isis used the signs in conjunction with words as she began speaking and
eventually it petered out, but her understanding of the functions of
language as well as the use of words, signs and gestures seemed to help
develop her communication skills early.
My 2 cents worth... :-)
