There's another particular point in this context that bears noticing by
people in our circles. I intend this as a response to Jay's concerns in
general, although it happens to arise again from the particular instance of
the TV show.
In objecting to the TV episode, 'Education Secretary Margaret Spellings said
the "Sugartime!" episode does not fulfill the intent Congress had in mind
for programming. By law, she said, any funded shows must give top attention
to "research-based educational objectives, content and materials."'
The supposed Congressional requirement that programming be "research-based"
is raised against anything the Right wants to suppress; but was the episode
with the Utah Mormons or the Texas rodeo folk any more "research-based"?
We are a community that maybe could be heard on the appropriateness of
invoking "research" to qualify or disqualify programs and activities.
