I pass on for those who may be interested, from my friend Robert
deBeaugrande, a leader and pioneer in discourse studies and text
linguistics, and professor emeritus of the university of vienna, this
generous offer to make some of his substantial works (he was a very
prolific and good writer) available online, and for scholars without online
access even on cdrom.
He references the important issue that academic publication has become
increasingly hostage to the high costs (and profits) of international
publishers, tying up too much of the scholarship of empowerment away from
those around the world whom we hope might find greatest use for it. It
really is our responsibility to do something about this, as I know many of
you have already begun to do. Robert sets us a good example.
