I just read an obituary for Walter Ong in the Saturday paper. He may have
overgeneralized the divide between literacy and orality, but he changed how
these terms mean for many of us; he linked subjectivities to cultural
practices & opened & sharpened the intuitions of literacy researchers. Today
might be a good day to return to some of his early work & contemplate the
past four decades of literacy research.
