I'd be interested too, but don't want to undermine or distract from the
discussion of Foote's paper. So maybe another time.
I've incorporated Vygotsky's ideas on play in two areas of research. One
concerns teachers' concept development--many US schools now have very
restricted teaching environments because of federal and state mandates,
limiting the degree to which teachers can play/experiment with ideas that
may lead to professional/conceptual growth. The second (often related)
concerns the ways in which play is central to activity-based instruction
that enables growth in learning among students. Toward this end I've tried
to synthesize the ideas of Vygotsky, Csikszentmihalyi (notion of "flow"),
and Hillocks (activity-based teaching and learning).

If there's sufficient interest, I'd like to introduce this topic to the
list for discussion when people have discussed Foote to their satisfaction.
