Grossman, Smagorinski, et al. and has a nice article that differentiates
between *activity setting* and *arena* (in contrast to *activity system*)
addressing some of the problems of intersubjectivity and shared
motive/object. The paper appears as follows:
Grossman, P. L., Smagorinsky, P., & Valencia, S. (1999). Appropriating tools
for teaching English: A theoretical framework for research on learning to
teach. American Journal of Education, 108, 1-29.
Cook, Smagorinsky et al. then build upon this to think about a teacher making
the transition from a school of education to a real classroom in The
Elementary School Journal, which is available in the ebsco sociological
collection full text database. Shiploads of grounded discussion here.
