A new CELA research report is now available online: "The Twisting Path of
Concept Development in Learning to Teach," by Peter Smagorinsky, Leslie
Susan Cook, and Tara Star Johnson. In this report the authors suggest that
one way to get away from the theory-practice divide often attributed to
teacher preparation versus actual teaching is to think about Vygotsky's
ideas of concept. Peter Smagorinsky and coauthors explain Vygotsky's
distinctions between concepts, pseudo-concepts and complexes, and argue
that teacher educators should strive to stress concept development as a way
to help their students bring together theory and practice. Report 16002 is
