criteria for community

The following was written by Paul Barber, Surrey University, UK. I don't
know that it meets the level of some of the more formal definitions of
community, but it rang true to me, at least at an individual level. What is
lacking, I think, is a sense of collectivity (e.g., a shared sense of
purpose, a common agenda, etc.):

Capability
How empowered do I feel to make changes?
Am I at liberty to create something new?
Are there people around who are willing to help me?

Commitment
How connected am I to others and how connected are they to me?
Am I part of a community or a lone wolf?
Are my values supported here?

Contribution
How valued and recognised am I for who I am or what I do?
Am I encouraged to grow in this environment?
Is what I invest in the community recognised?

Continuity
How secure do I feel in my present role?
Am I stagnating or can I see a clear career path before me?
Is my experience recognised and valued?

Collaboration
How flexible can I or others really be here?
Am I supported and do I readily support others?
Is communication open and honest in this setting?

Conscience
How caring of others and cared for by others do I feel?
Am I working for the common good?
Are my needs and those of others recognised in this setting?

Celebration
How fulfilled and celebratory do I feel?
Am I enriched by what I do?
Is my desire to create and to achieve met here?
